Cupcakes with rose flavored buttercream frosting - Piping a rose on a cupcake.

We have all heard the poem,

"Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
 And so are you."

Admit it!!! Girls love flowers especially roses.Dunno why a rose cheers a women and makes everything look lovely for the rest of the day. However bad a day can get, a bouquet of roses makes you smile.

I always get an urge of eating those teeny ting buds. They are not that sweet , believe me !! I did try eating them.So ,I came up with an idea of creating a rose flavored cupcake frosting that is so irresistible to see and taste that you will never go back to your vanilla butter cream frosting again.

Cupcakes with rose bouquet piping
I made these cute rose cupcakes for my husband's birthday and he loved it !!!  You can make this for Christmas,Valentines day , birthdays or anytime you feel like having it  :)

In this recipe I am gonna show you how I piped the rose bouquet on chocolate cupcakes with step by step procedure with pictures so that you can try it out too :).

For this recipe you will need  pure rose extract / rose water. Its hard to find, I know but try using the pure one instead of the imitation. Its worth all the trouble.

This recipe is for chocolate cupcakes and rose butter cream frosting.

Preparation time : 10 min

Cooking time : 16-20 min

Makes : 16 cupcakes

Ingredients for Chocolate Cupcakes:

  • 1/2 cup or 50 grams of cocoa powder
  • 175 grams all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 113 grams unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 200 grams granulated white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Ingredients for Rose Buttercream Frosting:
  • 230 grams confectioners sugar or icing sugar
  • 113 grams unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp pure rose extract / rose water
  • 1/2 tsp of pure honey
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or light cream
  • Assorted food colors (red and pink)

Preparing the cupcakes:

Always have two separate bowls for the dry ingredients and wet ingredients.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly butter your cupcake tray, or line 16 muffin cups with paper liners.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and salt.

Then in another the bowl ,with your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until smooth. Add in the vanilla extract. Then add the flour mixture and beat until incorporated.

Fill each cup liner in the tray about two-thirds full with batter and bake for about 16 - 20 minutes or until  and a toothpick inserted into a cupcake comes out clean. (Do not over bake or the cupcakes will be dry.)

Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool. Once the cupcakes have completely cooled, frost with your icing.

Preparing  the icing :

In an electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, cream the butter until smooth and well blended.

Add the vanilla extract, rose extract and honey. With the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in the sugar.

Add the milk and beat on high speed until frosting is light and fluffy.

Using a flat end spatula or a spoon just spread a little amount of uncolored icing on the cupcake which acts as a background. This is optional.

Piping a rose bouquet on the cupcakes :

For this decoration i used a Wilton Petal Decorating Tip no 103.

Image Coutesy :www.wilton.com
I have used pink and red gel based food coloring. Pour a few drops of each food color into the icing separately and mix them well.

Using a spatula take a large amount of the colored icing into the icing bag and fit the petal tip inside the bag.

At the center of the cupcake, hold the bag vertically so that the thick end of the nozzle touches the cupcake and the thin end is at the top.

Pipe the central bud of the design by squeezing the piping bag with even pressure while turning your cake in a circle.

Piping a rose on a cupcake
This is the base and the center of the rose bud.Repeat and makes 3 more on top of another.

Continue piping petals, turning the cake and watch the rose grow.As you reach the outer edges, you will  be able to pipe larger petals.

Squeeze the piping bag a little harder than before and lifting as you pipe to create a slightly rounded petal. When you reach the end of your cupcake liner , stop piping and let it rest for 2 mins .

Cupcake with a rose topping
You can repeat the same process for the rest of your cupcakes using any color you like.

These cupcakes were a huge hit in my party and makes a cute gift for any holiday.Happy holidays Everybody !!!
